Courses and Qualification Requirements for the Smog Check Inspectors and Smog Check Repair License.

There are 2 Licenses available to a current technician or a perspective technician:

  1. Smog Check Inspector Technician
  2. Smog Check Repair Technician

Technicians wishing to obtain just an "Inspectors" License are required to complete the requirements for that license as stated below.

Technicians wishing to obtain just a "Repair" License are required to complete the requirements for that license as stated below.

Technicians wishing to obtain both the Inspector and Repair licenses must complete the requirements for both licenses.

Smog Check Inspectors License:

Candidates with minimal or no experience must complete both Engine and Emission Control Training (Level 1) and Smog Check Training (Level 2) within the last 2 years, and pass a state licensing exam.

Experienced candidates, (those who already have ASE A-6, A-8 and L-1 certifications, or meet one of several other acceptable options as noted below), must successfully complete Level 2 Smog Check training within the last 2 years, and pass a state examination. Experienced candidates are not Required to take Level 1 Engine and Emission Control training. Proof of experience: Possess ASE A-6,A-8, and L-1 certifications; or possess an AA/AS degree or a Certification in Automotive Technology and have 1-year experience; or have 2 years’ experience and have completed BAR Specified Diagnostic and Repair Training consisting of the ASE Alternative courses A-6, A-8 and L-1.   (Note: BAR will be checking “Proof of Experience” through employer contacts and IRS Tax Statements. In addition; all technicians’ weather current or perspective can no longer mix and match the ASE required courses A-6, A-8 and L-1 with ASE Alternative A-6, A-8 and L-1. For example; candidates must take and pass all three ASE courses or take all ASE Alternative courses in order to meet the requirements. Example: a Candidate cannot take and pass the ASE A-6 and ASE A-8 then fail the ASE L-1 and take the ASE L-1 Alternative for the purpose of satisfying the requirements for licensing. It is advisable that technicians weigh the odds of passing the ASE tests, versus the hands-on training and knowledge technicians receive by attending the BAR Specified Diagnostics Training Courses.

Smog Check Repair Technician License:

Candidates may qualify for the Smog Check Repair Technician license in any of the following four ways:

  1. Possess certification in the categories of Electrical/Electronics Systems (A-6), Engine Performance (A-8) and Advanced Engine Performance Specialist (L-1) from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and pass the state examination; or
  2. Possess an Associates of Arts or Associate of Science degree or higher in Automotive Technology from a state accredited or recognized college, public school, or trade school, and have one year automotive repair experience in engine performance area, and pass the state examination; or
  3. Possess a certification in automotive technology from a state accredited  or recognized college, public school, or trade school with a minimum 720 hours of course work that includes at least 280 hours in the engine performance area, and have one year of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area, and pass the state examination.
  4. Have a minimum of two years of automotive repair experience in the engine performance area, and successfully complete bureau specified diagnostics and repair training within the last five years, and pass the state licensing examination. Bureau specified diagnostics and repair training consists of the ASE Alternative Courses in A-6, A-8 and L-1. Note: all technicians’ weather current or perspective can no longer mix and match the ASE required courses A-6, A-8 and L-1 with ASE Alternative A-6, A-8 and L-1 courses, that is; candidates must take and pass all three ASE courses or take all ASE Alternative courses in order to meet the requirements. Example: a Candidate cannot take and pass the ASE A-6 and ASE A-8 then fail the ASE L-1 and take the ASE L-1 Alternative for the purpose of satisfying the requirements for licensing.

Prerequisites: This class is recommended for the advanced level technician. Technicians should have good command of fuel control, oxygen sensors and air fuel ratio sensor operations along with the ability to understand electrical schematics. This is primarily a “hands on” lab based instructional class.

This “Strategy Based” diagnostics course is an all new Scan Tool course that is designed using a completely different approach to instruction. The emphasis of this course is to develop critical thinking skills that will assist technicians in reaching their next level of comprehension and understanding. This course shows the best PID’s, Controls, and other Scan Tool functions to use for each diagnosis. We have reinvented Scan Tool training because button-pushing and menu navigation doesn’t make you successful. Rather, success comes when you know your Scan Tool so well that you can set the flowchart aside and ‘make up’ your own Strategy Based Diagnostic Path. Since Engineers cannot write for every single possible fault, this path is more accurate and quite a bit shorter than the flowchart. There are dozens of examples of this strategy in action, diagnosing the most common faults: C.A.N. Wave Patterns, Good Signals, Bad Signals, Fuel Trim Codes, EVAP Leaks, O2 and Air/Fuel Sensor Codes, Misfire Code Isolation Techniques, EGR functional, Fault Codes, Body & Chassis Codes, Scan Tool “No-Communication” faults, and other functional failure codes. Test vehicles are bugged and ready to challenge your abilities. Feel Free to bring your personal Scanners and DSO’s.

Technician Mentoring Class     8 hours     $500.00

This specialized mentoring has been a very successful class for technicians looking to sharpen their skill sets. This is a one on one instructional class that is 100% lab based; NO LECTURES, just you and me in the lab with no other interruptions.

The key concept with this class is to take you to your next level of understanding, comprehension, and diagnostic abilities. If you’re not where you need to be, this class will get you there. If you’re good this instruction will make you better. Let me pass on to you 40 years of experience as a factory trained technician in Ford, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda and several European platforms. In addition; as a former BAR employee, providing instruction to all BAR Field Reps state wide, Supervisors, BAR Management and BAR Lab Technicians for well over 5 years and hours in the courtroom involving “Citation Cases” this instruction will help you steer clear of very expensive “Citations”.

I can assess your skills in about 15 minutes, and will Taylor your instruction for you and you only, not what a BAR curriculum requires or some other instructional method. In this class., you will use the latest up to date Factory equipment, as well as the most recent After-Market equipment or if you want you can bring your own equipment if you choose.
